Here's a great tutorial about how to make the armor for a zelda costume using craft foam: http://zeldaness.deviantart.com/art/Princess-Zelda-Costume-75864182
Metallic fabric will give you an armor-like look. You should be able to use a basic vest-type or bodice pattern. Use metallic braids and trims for the scrollwork.
Thank you all for your input. We found a perfect pattern today for the dress and vest. That tutorial on making armor from craft foam was pretty amazing!
I am currently looking to put together a Zelda costume for halloween. If you don't mind me asking, what pattern did you use for the dress and vest? Thanks in advance!
Hello Summer - I used Simplicity 9891. I made the dress sleeveless. The pattern comes in several sizes in one envelope. My intention was to make it one size larger for the jacket - and to cut it shorter. Make the pattern out of muslin first to practice fitting it. I found it difficult as the person wearing the costume was not built in precisely the same dimensions as the pattern stated. It was funny because she weighs about 98 lb, but the pattern expected her waist to be much smaller! I cut it wider at the waist and took it in later when she was present for a fitting. We never finished the costume. I think she lost interest. But I have all the supplies if she decides she wants to pursue it in the future. Happy sewing - its an ambitious project! Chris

Sorry...
Looks exciting! I am sorry I can't help. Will you be using gold lame?
Try getting some gold lamé at Joann's and layer it with a thin batt and something more substantial on the bottom. Soft, shiny, and armour-like.
